Professional Biography

Lisa A. Freitas is an attorney/mediator at Sawyer Mediation and provides family law consultation and mediation services for parties with divorce, parenting, custody, support and other family law disputes, as well as cohabitation, premarital and post marital agreements.  

Lisa brings a diverse background to her practice as she has experience as a corporate litigation, a family law attorney, a divorce and custody mediator and earned her Masters degree in Psychology, with a Marriage and Family Therapy concentration. Ms. Freitas began her legal career over eleven years ago first at Fenwick & West, LLP and later at Morgan Lewis & Bockius, both in San Francisco, practicing intellectual property, corporate, securities and white collar litigation.  

Lisa has been active in the Bay Area family law community since 2008, and has received extensive training in mediation practice and family law mediation. She received her Masters Degree in Psychology with a Marriage and Family Therapy concentration in 2011 from Golden Gate University. She is also an experienced divorce attorney and family law litigator, with diverse experience including division of large, complex estates to smaller uncontested divorces.

Lisa Freitas practiced as a family law attorney and mediator for Sideman & Bancroft, LLP from 2011 though 2014, leaving for six months to help former Sideman partner, Raquel Sefton, start her own family law practice, Sefton Family Law Group. Lisa handled family law cases of all sizes from premarital agreements and bifurcated issues to the division of complex multi-million dollar estates.
 
Lisa appeared in many Bay Area counties including, San Francisco, Marin, San Mateo, Alameda, Contra Costa and Santa Clara, in both superior courts and in front of private judges. As a family law attorney, Lisa researched and briefed complex business valuations, division of stock options of closely held and public corporations, division of intellectual property, and other marital assets. She also has extensive experience representing clients in high conflict custody disputes.
 
As a mediator, Lisa has mediated divorces in all aspects of family law, including asset division, custody, and support. Lisa has also mediated complex custody disputes and created parenting plans.

Lisa received awards for Best Brief, as well as Witkin and CALI awards for her course work in criminal law.

Lisa served as a discussion group leader providing "tutoring" to incoming law students.

At Golden Gate, Lisa interned at St. Peter's Elementary School in San Francisco as an elementary school counselor providing family counseling to children and their families.

Lisa Freitas has been an active member of Queen's Bench Bar Association since 2006 as a member of its Business Development Committee. Queen's Bench is an organization focused on fostering professional and social relationships among women lawyers and to promote equality and opportunity for all women through education, programs and community outreach. In 2008, Lisa was invited to join the board and in 2013, she became President. In 2014, Lisa served as President of the Queen's Bench Foundation Board, an affiliate organization with the specific purpose of researching and educating the community about human and civil rights secured by law.

Through her service and membership in Queen's Bench, Lisa was approached by Judge Charlene Keisselbach to join her steering committee for the Color of Justice Program in San Francisco. In addition to Judge Keisselbach, Lisa joins Judge Suzanne Bolanos former Dean of Golden Gate Law School, Dru Ramey, family law attorney, Kelly Robbins, and California Women Lawyers President, Eliza Rodriguez on the steering committee.

 
 

Ms. Freitas brings a diverse background to her practice as she has experience as a divorce and custody mediator and earned her Masters degree in Psychology, with a Marriage and Family Therapy concentration, from Golden Gate University.

Her goal in her practice, whether it is acting as a mediator or an advocate, is to focus on meeting her clients' needs and helping them reach an agreement in a supportive and healthy fashion.

Lisa Freitas was born in Sacramento, California. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from UCLA in 1997. She enjoys wine tasting with friends, attending live and musical theater and spending time with her family. She lives in Emeryville with her husband and two young children.
